In Brunch 11 we begin with "The Warden," part two. If you're new this week the intro will give you some background but if you'd like part 1 at the end of the program let Fred or myself know and we'll Sendspace the entire show. The Warden is the first of Anthony Trollope's Barchester Chronicles and was written in 1855. It's the story of Septimus Harding the warden of Hiram's hospital in Barchester and what happens to him when he is accused of avarice. The Bishop and Doctor Grantly the archdeacon are certain after an article appears in the reformists newspaper "The Jupiter," that they can clear Harding and through the help of "high-standing London church man and Parliament representative Sir Abraham Haphazard they are able to assert that Harding is in fact given a stipend for his management of the choir of the Cathedral and his care of the twelve old men of Hiram's Hospital. But the lawsuit has hurt him gravely. For starters his old friend John Bold is the person who started this whole affair and his daughter Eleanor wishes to marry John Bold but loves her father so much she would stop loving John Bold to keep the good name of her father. Things will all come to head in this episode first broadcast on November 7 1998 over Radio 4. After we're done with the Warden Fred takes over with Dixon of Dock Green.
Based on the popular TV series (this is not TV audio adapted for radio), Dixon of Dock Green, George Dixon is an old-fashioned beat constable. Today, George is showing a new boy Andy Crawford the ropes on the beat of Dock Green. To PC Crawford's surprise, Dixon is prepared to bend the rules in order to arrest one of a gang of safebreakers. This was originally broadcast on June 15, 2006. After Dixon, we'll here the final part of The Bing Crosby Trail from December 7, 2007.
