Thursday Night – Old Time Radio

THURSDAY NIGHT IN THE FRED BERTELSEN OLD-TIME-RADIO ROOM

Our Presenter for this week is Rick Spurgeon. Let us read what Rick will be playing.

His career bracketed radio’s heyday. A gaff in his early broadcasting days which should have hurled him into oblivion instead launched him to the top of his profession. He was an announcer but soon became a second banana to stars such as Eddie Cantor, Joan Davis, Dinah Shore and others. He was too popular to work for any one network or sponsor. Even though he was thought of more as an entertainer, he never lost his touch as a serious broadcaster, covering such events as Admiral Byrd’s flight over the south pole. He even had a movie career in preparation for the day when he’d be forced to tackle television, which he easily conquered. And don’t forget his own short-lived radio sitcom. You know who we’re talking about, don’t you?

Our Presenter for this week isMatt Cox. . Let us read what Matt will be playing.

This time on Cruising The Classics I’m continuing my trend of getting to know an author’s works not just a random work. As it’s John’s birthdaay, we’re going to start with a true New Englander, Nathaniel Hawthorne. We’ll look at two very different works which may surprise and seem familiar to you at the same time. We’ll start by listening to Favorite Story from Feb 18 1947 Doctor Heideger’s Experiment then conclude with a half hour NBC University Theater version of probably Hawthorne’s most famous work The Scarlet Letter from Nov 26 1950.
Thanks so much for listening. Matt Cox
